Beyond Industry: Visual Storytelling in Commercial Photography
Thrilled to share a recent journey through East Borneo—a region rich in nature, history, and industrial dynamism—where I had the privilege to work on a commissioned photography project for PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk (ITM). More than just documenting operations, this project was about capturing ITM’s deeper purpose: sustainability, inclusion, and ethical growth.
ITM and its subsidiaries believe that good business starts with responsibility. Sustainability is not just a pillar, it’s the path. From environmental care and social empowerment to governance with integrity, their ESG commitments are not just promises—they’re visible in the way they work, interact, and grow with local communities. Being part of this annual report and sustainability storytelling effort was a real honor.

This body of work explores the human and natural side of extractive industry—a sector often seen only through cold numbers and technical narratives. Through a lens of visual storytelling, we tried to surface the unseen: workers’ pride, the rhythm of operations, the community engagement efforts, and the landscape that sustains it all.
“The picture that you took with your camera is the imagination you want to create with reality.”
— Sebastião Salgado

Annual or sustainability reporting today isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about earning trust, communicating vision, and aligning with a global commitment like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). That’s where visual storytelling plays a crucial role—giving face and feeling to facts.
Photographing industrial and commercial projects like this poses its own creative challenge: how do we make something complex, often technical, feel human and grounded? For us, the answer is always the same—empathy, curiosity, and honesty in every frame.
“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart, and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it.” —Irving Penn

Big thanks to the entire ITM family for the collaboration and trust. Grateful.
